South Canterbury District Health Board (SCDHB) supports breastfeeding because it plays an important part in the health and well-being of babies, mothers and families/whanau.
South Canterbury has a Breastfeeding Action Group, which includes a number of stakeholders with an interest in breastfeeding support and promotion. Organisations represented on the group include La Leche League, Community & Public Health, SCDHB, He Oranga Pai Health Clinic, Plunket and Aoraki Primary Health Organisation.
Breastfeeding is natural and normal, but it can be challenging and needs to be learned.

Breastfeeding Welcome Here
“Breastfeed anywhere, anytime, anyplace”
The Breastfeeding Welcome Here Project has been established to identify those places within the community that are supportive of breastfeeding. Supportive environments play a vital role in a mother’s choice to breastfeed and in the continuation of breastfeeding. It is important that mothers feel welcome and comfortable when breastfeeding their children outside of the home.
Breastfeeding friendly venues who display the sticker have met the following criteria:
• Welcoming and supportive staff
• Comfortable seating available and easily accessible, preferably with low arms
